I needed to install SP1 for Visual Studio today since I was getting some errors in my Ajax for ASP.NET apps (regarding intellisense and master pages) - and google (in the end it was Scott Guthrie as many many times before) told me to install VS2005 SP1.
Well, first of all. The download is 435 MB. Almost half a gig of patches...And the only reason (for me) was to get that little master pages bug fixed - I mean while generally do care about having the latest version sometimes you ask yourself is it worth it.
Ok, the download was pretty fast - sitting on a 2MB XDSL line was ok - however my real problems hadn't begun.
My first try was around 13:00. First of all the unpacking and initialization takes forever. Later rather than sonner it begins installing - and after, say 30 minutes or so, I get an error message saying I am out of disk on my C: drive. And I almost were. Well I did have around 250 MB left at that time. I tried cleaning up temp files (then pressing rety in the install program) - no luck. I tried removing even more files, no luck.
I then though, hey I have a lot of programs I might uninstall - however when running the uninstall it stopped saying something like "Uninstall could not continue because setup is running ". Meaning you can just have one WIndows installer program running at the time, I guess.
So I had to cancel SP1 install ( this took ages as well, it backs the whole installation removes all files etc)...
I moved the temp directory - I tried to move the "Document and settings" folder but didn't dare...
I tried to remove some programs, I browsed my C: drive for more files to remove. I tried to move my VMWare files to another disk - however since the files were 6GB I couldn't move them to the new location (out of temp disk space or whatever)...
I did try to run the SP1 install a couoke of times during that file deletion prograss (cause it doesn't say how much disk IS needed - you will find out after half an hour...).
Then I finally got it! After my last reinstall I never moved the pagefile to my second disk! Horray -freeing 2 GB on the C: drive. Same with hibernate file - that was only 2 GB which I could remove after disabling that.
And finally - I got it installed. At 17:00...What a waste of time...
